Tier 2 (General) Visa
You can apply for a Tier 2 (General) visa if

How long you can stay:
You can come to the UK with a Tier 2 (General) visa for a maximum of 5 years and 14 days, or the time given on your certificate of sponsorship plus 1 month, whichever is shorter.
Your stay must start no more than 14 days before the start date on your certificate of sponsorship.
You can apply to extend this visa for up to another 5 years, as long as your total stay is not more than 6 years.

A shortage occupation is a skilled job where there is a shortage of workers in the UK.

Getting sponsored for a Tier 2 (General) Visa:
You need to have a certificate of sponsorship from a licensed sponsor (į.e. potential employer) before you can apply to come to the UK to work, and the work you do in the UK must relate to the work of your sponsor organisation. You can apply for a visa up to 3 months before the date you travel to the UK.

What you can and cannot do on Tier 2 (General) Visa:

You can

  • work for your sponsor in the job described in your certificate of sponsorship
  • do a second job in the same sector and at the same level as your main job for up to 20 hours per week
  • do a job which has a shortage of workers in the UK for up to 20 hours per week
  • do voluntary work
  • study as long as it doesn't interfere with the job you're sponsored for
  • travel abroad and return to the UK
  • bring family members with you

You cannot

  • own more than 10% of your sponsor's shares (unless you earn more than £153,500 a year)
  • start working before you get the visa
  • apply for a second job until you've started working for your sponsor
  • get public funds

Tier 1 (General) Visa
You can apply to switch from your current visa to a Tier 1 (General) visa if you have permission to stay (‘leave to remain') in the UK in one of the following categories:

Uk Standard Visitor Visa

  • writer, composer or artist
  • self-employed lawyer
  • Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP)

You cannot apply for a Tier 1 (General) category visa if you're outside the UK, and you usually can't switch to it from other immigration categories.

How long you can stay on a Tier 1 (General) Visa:
You can switch to a Tier 1 (General) visa for 3 years. However, in all cases, you'll be given enough leave to take the total leave granted in Tier 1 (General) to 5 years.
You must meet certain English language requirements.
You may be able to apply for settlement once you've been in the UK for 5 years.

What you can and can't do on a Tier 1 (General) Visa:
You can

  • work in most jobs in the UK without a sponsor
  • be self-employed
  • bring family members with you

You cannot

  • work as a professional sportsperson (eg a sports coach)
  • work as a doctor in training (unless you have a primary degree at a bachelor's level or above in medicine or dentistry from a UK recognised body or a licensed sponsor under the Tier 4 visa category
  • get public funds

Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) Visa
You can apply for a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa if:

  • you've been endorsed as an internationally recognised leader or emerging leader in your field in science, humanities, engineering, medicine, digital technology or the arts
  • you're from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland
  • There is a 2 stage application process to get this visa.

You first need to apply to the Home Office for endorsement as a leader or an emerging leader in your particular field. Then, once you have been endorsed, you can apply for the visa.

How long you can stay on a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) Visa:
You can stay in the UK for

  • 5 years and 4 months if you apply outside the UK
  • 5 years if you switch to this visa inside the UK
  • 5 more years if you extend this visa

What you can and can't do:
You can

  • do voluntary work
  • travel abroad and return to the UK
  • bring family members with you

You cannot

  • get public funds
  • work as a doctor or dentist in training
  • work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach

How long it will the via application process take:

After you get your endorsement, you can apply for a visa up to 3 months before your date of travel to the UK. You should get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks.

Representative of an Overseas Business visa:
You can apply to come to the UK as a representative of an overseas business if you're from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland and you're either:

  • the sole representative of an overseas company planning to set up a UK branch or a wholly owned subsidiary for an overseas parent company
  • an employee of an overseas newspaper, news agency or broadcasting organisation posted on a long-term assignment to the UK
  • You must also meet the other eligibility requirements.

How long it will take:
You can apply for a visa up to 3 months before you travel to the UK.
You should get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks.

How long you can stay on a Representative of an Overseas Business visa:
You can come to the UK for an initial period of 3 years.
You may be able to extend your visa for another 2 years.
After you've been in the UK for 5 years, you can apply for permission to settle permanently in the UK.

What you can and can't do:
You can

  • work for your employer, full time
  • bring your family (‘dependants') with you to the UK
  • extend your visa multiple times
  • apply to settle in the UK after you've been here for 5 years
  • stay in the UK if your company's circumstances change and you've been here for more than 2 years (eg if they appoint a superior in the UK)

You cannot

  • work for yourself or any other business
  • stay in the UK if the sole representative arrangement is ended by your employer
  • switch to this visa from any other visa category
  • get public funds

Domestic Workers in a Private Household Visa:
You can apply for a visa to visit the UK with your employer if you:

  • are from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland
  • are a domestic worker in a private household
  • have worked for your employer for at least 1 year
  • meet the other eligibility requirements

Domestic workers include:

  • cooks
  • cleaners
  • chauffeurs
  • nannies
  • those providing personal care for the employer and their family

How long it will take to get a decision:
You can apply for a visa up to 3 months before your date of travel to the UK. You should get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks.
