A 2D game like Street Fighter is all based around controling space on a 2D playfield. The main goal is to attack an opponent and drain their life gauge in order to win enough rounds to win a match. During the course of a matchup, a player will execute attacks in order to limit the movement space and options of the opponent. Every attack from a character has a specific amount of space on the playfield that can hit a character, or be hit by a character's attack. This goes for all attacks in the game, be it regular attacks, Special attacks, or Super Attacks.

Special Attacks are unique moves that are specific to each character in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix. Special moves are done by inputing a series of commands with a combination of a direction (with a joystick or d-pad) and any of the punch or kick buttons. Unlike normal attacks, special attacks not only do different amounts of damage to opponents, but also control space on the playfield in dynamic and useful ways. All characters in the game have at least 3 - 4 different special attacks that they can use as many times as a player can execute the right input combination.
Super Attacks are even stronger versions of special attacks that do incredible amounts of damage. Super attacks can only be used when a player has filled up a SUPER meter displayed at the bottom of the screen. The SUPER meter is filled up as a player lands normal and special attacks on an opponent, and when filled it begins to flash SUPER on the bottom of the screen. To execute a SUPER attack once the meter is full, a player needs to input the right button commands that are necessary to launch a character's Super attack.
